THE PARK,

NATIONAL HISTORICAL

MONUMENT AND MORE.

Located 52 km south of the city of Punta Arenas, in the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, Parque del Estrecho de Magallanes,  undoubtedly houses one of the most important historical and geographical sites in the southernmost tip of the American continent, where the National Historic Monuments Fuerte Bulnes and Ciudad Rey Don Felipe or “Puerto del Hambre” are located, both representing the first attempts at settlement by Western culture in the basin of the Strait of Magellan; both attempts were separated by almost 300 years.

The origins of the Parque del Estrecho date back to the 1920s, when remains of the original Fort that had existed between 1843 and 1852 were found and was later rebuilt (1940s).

The park also protects archaeological sites that indicate human presence for thousands of years, as well as being home to various forms of life representative of the territory. It is located on the coast, between Carrera and San Juan bays, and occupies the peninsula called Punta Santa Ana, which is a rocky promontory with panoramic views of the landscape.

Punta Arenas has a subpolar oceanic climate.

Three factors can be distinguished that influence the characteristics of its climate: atmospheric circulation (depending on latitude), the oceanic influence (Pacific Ocean) and the southern Andes mountain range, the Patagonian Fuegian mountain range (Notes on the climate of Magellan (Chile) by Agustín Xercavins Comas); where it is not possible to abstract from the influence represented by the Antarctic continent.

With its 250 hectares, Parque del Estrecho is located in a privileged environment of great natural wealth;

Being on the coast, it is possible to sight coastal seabirds, marine fauna such as sea lions and, if we are lucky, whales and southern dolphins; the peninsula also has a sector of Magellanic Forest that allows the observation of birds such as the ralladito or chercán, in addition to the tree species of Nothofagus such as the Coigüe de Magallanes, Ñirre, Lenga as well as the Calafate, Michay and Leñadura.
